While I am working or just recreating — usually golfing — I get asked many times about the importance of blood pressures. Mark Kohoutek asked me just the other day what a normal blood pressure should be. I don't know if his golf game is raising his or just what the issue is, but let me explain a little bit about blood pressures.
There are two words that are associated with your blood pressure: systolic and diastolic, which are measured in millimeters of mercury.

The systolic pressure reading is while your heart is contracting, sending oxygenated blood from the heart to the body, replacing unoxygenated blood. The diastolic pressure reading is the residual pressure when the heart muscles relax and the heart fills back up with blood. These pressures are measured with a blood pressure cuff, also called a sphygmomanometer.
The normal range for blood pressures are a systolic of 90-140mm of mercury and a diastolic of 60-90mm of mercury for adults. So if your systolic blood pressure is much over this 140mm of mercury reading, it means your heart is working excessively hard. Whereas, if your systolic number is much below 90mm of mercury, it means your heart is not efficiently distributing blood to your organs and extremities. On the diastolic side, if your reading much above 90mm of mercury, your heart is not resting very much between beats.
It is very important to monitor your blood pressure because it can tell a lot about your health and heart condition. Many people in the world are diagnosed with high blood pressure every year and are prescribed medication for it. There are a number of things you can do to help manage your blood pressure without medication. Two things that can be done on a daily basis are watching your sodium intake and overall diet and maintaining a good physical conditioning program.
Making sure you are healthy is one of the best gifts you can give your loved ones.
Weeks before his passing, my Grandpa Jack passed on this advice: "The greatest wealth is health."
Great Falls Fire/Rescue has four stations located around the city and each offers free blood pressure checks. If anyone would like to have their blood pressure checked, please stop by one of the stations and ask. Our personnel enjoy having people stop by and inquiring about such things. Our people are very knowledgeable in the medical field. We have 21 paramedics and 40 EMT basics on staff.
